WE HAVE ALL MET THEM – THOSE PEOPLE WHO SEEM TO EXUDE CONFIDENCE

Would it surprise you to learn that most of those same people have doubts, just like you do? Even the most confident people will face new situations that can shake their self belief. So, what’s their secret in overcoming that?

Confidence is not something you simply have or don’t have; it is something you create. It is a choice you make. And it starts with a positive mindset.  A mindset that supports your belief in yourself and your abilities, not just when things are good but in the face of challenge, failure, uncertainty and more.

We believe that building self-esteem and confidence are so important and love to support those we work with in maximising their potential through their thoughts and actions.

For starters:

Recognise your strengths and areas to work on. What are you good at? What things do you know need improvement? Celebrate and develop your strengths and successes and find ways to continue to grow and strengthen weaker areas.

Remember, you may not know how to do something …YET. ‘Yet’ is a powerful word, it allows you to try, to grow and not get stuck in the status quo.

  • I can’t do that..yet.
  • I don’t have enough money to buy that… yet.
  • I’m not fit enough to run that marathon…yet.

‘Yet’ forces your mind to move forward to a time that you can, you will, and places you in a positive mindset.

There is no failures, only feedback. Mistakes are learning opportunities if you choose to see them that way. Similarly, reframe how you see criticism. We all have opinions, criticism is just someone else’s take on something. Listen to that opinion, look for what you recognise in it, look at the facts and evidence, and use this to improve. But if criticism is unwarranted thank them for their feedback and move on.

Accept compliments and practice positive self-talk.  What do you do when you receive a compliment? Get embarrassed, shrug it off, only hear criticism? When you receive a compliment say thank you. You might even ask for more details; what exactly did they like? Recognise your achievements, celebrate them, and tell friends and family about them.

Try to adopt a generally positive outlook on life. Only complain or criticise when necessary and, when you do, do so in a constructive way. Offer others compliments and congratulate them on their successes.

Why is it important to be confident?

Learning how to be confident is important in every part of your life, but there are some instances where it’s crucial. If you are a leader you will know that no one will follow a leader who appears unsure of themselves. Lack of confidence can seriously impact your ability to achieving your personal and professional goals.
